
Brenda Knight is a scholar of medieval literature and modern poetry, and former editor of Etc. magazine. She is the author of Women of the Beat Generation: The Writers, Artists and Muses at the Heart of a Revolution Profiling forty women writers and artists, it is an intriguing survey of the Beat Generation showcasing the work of Joyce Johnson, Joan Vollmer Adams Burroughs, Joanne Kyger, Diane DiPrima, and others. It won the American Book Award in 1997.
Brenda thinks one explanation of the book’s continued popularity may be that “our current age of hype and commercialism makes people appreciate the raw authenticity of the Beats now more than ever.”
