Dana Godbe grew up in Bixby Canyon. Her parents were bohemians of the late forties. Her father, along with Lawrence Ferlinghetti and 17 others, bought Bixby Canyon in 1948 to create an artist colony. Dana and her family owned the fabled Alf the Sacred Donkey whom Kerouac often referred to in his book, Big Sur.
Dana eventually left Big Sur, sailing around the world, cooking on yachts and working on oil rigs and gravel mines in Alaska. But she knew she would return to the area one day to get married and raise a family, which is exactly what Dana did. Today she writes and owns and runs Grapes of Wrath, California Style Catering.
